Anthony Hoete

Professor of Architecture at the University of Auckland

Anthony is of Ngāti Awa and Ngāti Ranana (Māori) descent.  

He is a Professor of Architecture at the University of Auckland and an Adjunct Professor at the RMiT.

After graduating with a Masters from The Bartlett at University College London, and working for Mecanoo in The Netherlands, Anthony founded his own practice, WHAT Architecture (http://www.whatarchitecture.com) in London in 2002. The practice has received Royal Institute of British Architects, New Zealand Institute of Architects, and many other architectural awards for its innovative projects. A registered architect in three countries, including The Netherlands (SBA), the United Kingdom (ARB, RIBA), and Aotearoa NZ (NZIA NZRAB), Prof. Hoete has designed 150+ residential, commercial, and educational buildings, and several other urban designs, furniture, and marae projects, in Europe and also in Aotearoa New Zealand. He is the MD of the London-based property developer, Game of Architecture, which specialises in build-to-rent affordable housing made from CLT. He has taught at The Bartlett UCL, TU Delft, the Architecture Association in London, Sint Lucas Architektur in Brussels, the American University of Beirut, and RMIT in Melbourne. Anthony is a Director at QuakeCoRE (http://www.quakecore.nz/welcome-anthony-hoete-pouwhakahaere-maori-associate-director-maori/), a Centre for Earthquake Resilience funded by the NZ Tertiary Education Commission and a Trustee of The NZUK Link Foundation (http://www.nzuklink.com) which, under the Patronage of Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and Princess Royal, serves to enhance the close relationship between NZ and the UK. Anthony undertakes various Assessor roles including with: MBIE, Earthquake Commission, and the RMIT European Doctoral Innovators (REDI) programme. REDI (https://www.rediprogram.eu/) is co-funded by the European Union to create new research and enterprise links between Australia and Europe.
